Stop driving as soon as it's safe to do so.
This light generally indicates a problem serious enough that continuing to drive risks real damage or a safety issue.
Brake System Warning Light
Stop Driving NowWhat it generally indicates
Indicates a problem with the brake system, or — on many vehicles — that the parking brake is still engaged.
Possible causes
An engaged parking brake, a low brake fluid level (which can come from a leak, or from pads that are heavily worn), or — on many vehicles — a fault in the electronic brake-force distribution system, often shown together with the ABS light.
Whether continued driving may be risky
If this isn't simply the parking brake, reduced braking ability is a serious safety risk. If the light stays on after releasing the parking brake, if the pedal feels soft or low, or if it's on together with the ABS light, stop driving and have it checked before continuing.
What a technician may inspect
Confirm the parking brake is fully released, then check the brake fluid level; don't just top it up and carry on — a technician should inspect the brake system before the vehicle is driven further.

This is general guidance, not a diagnosis — your owner's manual is the final word for your specific model, and a qualified technician should confirm the actual cause.
