Check Engine Light
Service SoonWhat it generally indicates
Indicates the engine control system has detected a problem with the engine or emissions system that needs attention.
Possible causes
A loose or faulty gas cap, a failing oxygen sensor, a worn catalytic converter, spark plugs or ignition coils, or another emissions-system component are common triggers.
Whether continued driving may be risky
If the light is on steady, it's usually fine to keep driving carefully and get it checked soon. If it's flashing, that typically signals a misfire severe enough to overheat and damage the catalytic converter — reduce speed, avoid heavy acceleration or towing, and get it checked right away. If the engine is also shaking badly or losing power, stop driving and arrange a tow.
What a technician may inspect
A technician can retrieve the stored diagnostic trouble codes to narrow down which system triggered the light.

This is general guidance, not a diagnosis — your owner's manual is the final word for your specific model, and a qualified technician should confirm the actual cause.
