The gap it's named for
If your vehicle is stolen or declared a total loss, your comprehensive or collision coverage generally pays out the vehicle's actual cash value (ACV) at the time — roughly what it was worth on the used market, not what you originally paid or what you still owe on the loan.
Because vehicles typically depreciate faster than a loan balance comes down (especially early in a loan or on a longer term), it's common to owe more than the ACV payout at the exact moment something goes wrong. GAP (guaranteed asset protection) insurance is designed to cover that specific difference — the "gap" between the ACV payout and your remaining loan or lease balance.
When it tends to matter most
- Early in a loan, when the least principal has been paid down relative to how much the vehicle has already depreciated
- Longer loan terms, which pay down the balance more slowly
- Little or no down payment, which starts the loan at a higher balance relative to the vehicle's value from day one
- Leased vehicles, where GAP-style coverage is often built into or recommended alongside the lease
If you already have substantial equity in the vehicle — you owe less than it's worth — GAP coverage has nothing to actually cover, since there's no gap.
Where to get it, and what to compare
GAP coverage is sometimes offered by the dealer at the time of purchase, and separately by many insurers and some lenders as an add-on to a standard policy. Terms, cost and what counts as a "total loss" can vary by provider, so it's worth comparing more than one source rather than assuming the dealer's offer is the only option.
Check what a specific GAP product leaves out, too. Some don't cover your insurance deductible, overdue payments or fees, or negative equity rolled over from a previous loan. And if you bought GAP as part of the loan and later pay the loan off early or refinance, you may be entitled to a partial refund of what you paid for it — ask the provider.
Our Negative Equity Calculator can show you roughly where you stand right now — the closer to (or below) zero your equity is, the more a GAP scenario would actually matter to you.
